 Book Review: Getting Unstuck

“Getting Unstuck” by Timothy Butler provides a new and practical approach to getting past the “dead ends” in life. Butler , a researcher and business psychologist, works with students and business executives who have hit a “dead end”, and his work allows their inner thoughts and passions to direct them to the answer. He uses these case studies to illustrate his theories throughout the book.

The overall process revolves around six phases that Butler calls the “Cycle of Impasse”: the arrival of crisis and impasse; its deepening and the attendant re-emergence of unresolved issues; the dropping of old assumptions and the opening up to new information; the shift to a new way of understanding our situation; the greater recognition of deep patterns of our personality and the decision to take concrete action.

The book is structured into three sections that allow the reader to first identify an impasse, then unearth hidden interests and passions, and finally move from impasse to action. This is a practical self-help book that provides exercises to allow you to get past the dead end in your life. Like Butler says, “dead ends” have the possibility to become motivation for great change, if only you have the energy and patience to dig in.
To be honest, it wasn't quite what we thought it would be (we were hoping for more about solving business impasses and less self-help), but we certainly have come across many workforce planning journeys which are stuck - so it might be a useful tool for some!
