Exploring the Future

Exploring the future is absolutely critical in workforce planning, but forecasting based on the past alone isn't enough.  If you base your plans purely on what has happened in the past (eg on historical turnover only), you will miss vital things which haven't happened yet, such as new business strategies, aging workforce, emerging technology and many other potentially important factors.

Analyzing your future has three phases:

Quantitative Futuring involves understanding your No Change Future state by forecasting and extrapolating historical trend data into the future. It helps you understand problem areas, but is limited by what has already taken place.

During Qualitative Futuring, you use Scenario Planning to explore various alternative futures available to the business. Using a number of different factors, you are able to gain a deeper understanding of the issues at hand and discuss different options.

In analyzing to define the Targeted Future, you combine the information gathered in the previous stages to define the future you want to achieve. The process is iterative and allows you to plan for the future you want and how to get there.

While you should always keep the future in mind, the beginning of a new year is a great time to start thinking in depth about it. Watch out for a great new program from us in the new year to help you!

Happy Holidays!

Book Review: The Rise of the Project Workforce

Rudolph Melik's book "The Rise of the Project Workforce" is based on the premise that we live in a flat world, economically speaking. According to Melik, the flattening of the world has transformed how organizations operate; enabling them to reduce costs and recruit from a global talent pool while staying connected.

The book is a practical tool that covers the disciplines, technology and tools required in the current business climate. It teaches you how to combine project management and workforce management with traditional business functions to operate in this project based way.

Arranged into three parts, it covers the emergence of the project workforce, reference material on project and workforce management, and an implementation roadmap.  The book covers an interesting aspect of the modern workforce - project based work and globalized workforces are becoming increasingly common.  Does your organization have a project workforce?  Or, more likely, do you think they might in the future?  This book gives good background and good tips on how to manage such a group - good knowledge for exploring scenarios with your executive.
