Industry-wide Workforce Planning

How Mining is Building a Sustainable Future

Strategic workforce planning should always be an organization-wide initiative, however, this is not always enough. The Mining Industry Skills Centre realized this and took workforce planning a step further by implementing industry-wide measures.

Although the mining industry is booming, growth is hampered by skills shortages across the entire industry. Since this isn’t affecting only individual organizations, the Mining Industry Skills Centre is helping the organizations work together to workforce plan and create a sustainable workforce for the industry’s future.

Using CAPTure, the skills centre was able to balance the individual organizations’ data privacy needs with the need for an industry-wide approach. CAPure can automatically upload data from multiple companies and combine it with external factors to highlight workforce trends.

Thus, the Skills Centre was able to weigh trends, analyze gaps and plan for a sustainable, affordable future.

Book Review

"Get There Early"

“Get there early: sensing the future to compete in the present” by Bob Johansen is based on the premise that although you can't predict the future, you have to be able to understand it to thrive and suceed in the present.  Johansen uses techniques developed through years of study at the Institute for the Future to teach leaders how to make sense of future challenges.

In our technology-driven world, changes often happen quickly and leaders must be equipped how to handle them and how to stay ahead of their competitors. To do so, Johansen describes the 'The Foresight to Insight to Action Cycle' to help navigate the a world characterized by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. The technique is designed to help leaders make strategic sense out of mounting dilemmas by understanding where they are headed.

The book also includes a forecast map and the Institute for the Future's ten-year forcast for the coming years. Although not a replacement for a solid organization-wide strategic workforce planning approach, the book provides a basis for understanding why the future is so important and might be worth a look.
