Acting on Global Trends

McKinsey Quarterly Survey on Global Trends

McKinsey Quarterly recently published the results to their survey about how organizations around the world are handling some of the most important global trends. According to the survey, 70 percent of executives agree that these trends have become more important to corporate strategy, however, only some of them have been acting on them and an even smaller portion report significant benefits.

Although only some of the trends discussed are directly related to workforce, it is easy to see that all of them will somehow impact the way you manage your people. For example, fast changing technology requires your workforce to be able to adapt to new technology. Similarly, an ageing population means an ageing workforce to take into account.  You can see some ideas about how each of them impacts the workforce in the entry in our workforce planning blog.

Underinvesting in global trends can lead to serious problems and companies that fail to acknowledge and plan for these global trends are more likely to face workforce challenges in the future. A good workforce planning approach should incorporate an environment scanning process that allows you to filter these trends and analyze how they are likely to affect your organization.

Book Review

Living Strategy

Lynda Gratton’s Living Strategy, one of HR’s must-reads, was first published in 2000, however, in the light of today’s new and unique workforce challenges, we might start seeing this book in a new light.

Ground-breaking when it first hit the market and just as important today, the book uses real world examples of how successful companies are involving their people in their strategy.

We have long known that employees are critical to success, and Gratton puts forth three different reasons why people are different to money or technology. The book shows you how to design and implement new strategies so that to unite your people with your overall business strategy.

It’s time to get back to basics and find out how your people can help your company succeed - this is a great book to help you do just that.
