Human Capital Institute Workforce Planning Conference -
The Human Capital Institute’s Workforce Planning Conference
was held in Boston this month, and it included these case studies:
·Aetna, Inc –

future scenarios and define and track the organization’s talent strategy, with
engagement right up to the Chairman and CEO
·Rio Tinto –
Hugo Bague explained how a US led team at this large global mining company are
using a segmented approach covering the key 70% of their workforce with a
strong basis of analytics mixed with qualitative elements for a talent strategy
based approach
·Wolters Kluwer –
Kathy Baker described how this global content/publishing company are using
planning techniques to address the future of the organization, and the changing
nature in the future of work
·McKesson – Susan Slater uses
metrics to engage the attention of the executive, with long term consulting
assistance
·Starbucks Coffee Company- Lacey All showed how
workforce planning has been evolving from operational to a strategic talent
initiative via forecasting, modeling, education and strategic interventions
·Ameriprise –
Penny Meier described their approach to metrics, “running HR as a business” and
the impact these are having on the business
As one of the presenters
said to us, it was great to see terms like “scenario planning”, “environment
scanning”, “qualitative” and other expressions from strategic workforce
planning entering common use with such a wide group – but also the split
between operational/metrics based approaches and strategic/futures based
approaches remains really clear. When it
came to engagement of the highest levels of the business and that famed “seat
at the table”, the strategic practitioners seem to be a long way ahead. If you’d like some help moving your workforce
planning to that strategic plane, contact us to find out how….and don’t miss
next year’s HCI event!
