Aruspex Workforce Planning Insights
This Month in Workforce Planning
Scenarios - Scenarios and scenario planning is at the center of workforce planning, and it's very important that you do it right! Real scenario planning can help you explore the future in a non-threatening but very insightful way.

However, some people see scenario in a more simplistic way that can adversely affect your results. Scenario planning is not about looking at the "best, worst, most likely" forecasts. While this model usually produces interesting forecasts, it is not true scenario planning - forecasting is only looking at slight variations on the current/historical paradigm...not at real alternative futures. Looking at only three possible options makes makes planners tend towards the middle, "most likely", scenario, and, as futurist Joseph Coates puts it, "it misses the point that alternative futures are real possibilities".

Real scenario planning can help your organization produce effective, targeted talent strategies for competitive advantage - best, worst, most likely forecasts only look at slightly alternative staffing projections...which is much less useful!

Talent Segmentation - At Aruspex, we believe in talent segmentation, that is segmenting the talent market in the same way marketers segment the consumer market. In Diversity Executive, Robert Rodriquez discusses just this.

He says, "by dividing their market into segments, marketers are able to better meet the distinct needs, wants and behaviors of those with similar characteristics." Similarly, if HR executives understand their workforce's preferences, they can attract and retain the right people.

Talent segementation is a powerful technique that distinguishes strategic workforce planning from operational planning, and can help you gain competitive advantage.

In the news on workforce planning
HR experts have expressed concern about using analytics to pinpoint employee productivity and job satisfaction. According to Talent Management, productivity and collaboration are key to employee satisfaction. They also look at the different expectations of workers and employers when it comes to the workplace.

Human Capital Magazine predicts changes in hiring and job seeking behaviours in early 2010. However, Talent Management has advice for recruiting for hard-to-fill positions. Meanwhile, workforce planning is becoming big news due to new kinds of software.
