5 Years of Workforce Planning Insights

This newsletter marks the fifth anniversary of our Workforce Planning Newsletter, and to celebrate, we'd like to reminisce with you on some of our most popular articles.

Every month, we seek to inform you about what's going on at Aruspex and in the wider workforce planning community. We see promoting the use of workforce planning and explaining why analytics are not enough as one of our most important purposes at Aruspex. In the past, the newsletter has covered workforce planning techniques such as environment scanning, the No Change Future State, and the targeted future.  In fact, our newsletter page is a treasure trove of tips and techniques for workforce planners.

In the past year, one of our focuses has been on dealing with the global economic downturn by recapping current research and discussing workforce planning tips.

We hope that you've enjoyed sharing our journey so far, and that you continue to get insights every month.

When the Workforce Ossifies...

The current economy has caused problems for companies all over the world in many different ways, but as workforce planners, Aruspex is most interested in how the workforce is faring. A recent article in the Economist suggests that European governments are tackling the problem in an interesting way, by using government funds to subsidize shorter work weeks and other job saving measures.

This is having some interesting consequences. Although the changes make sense in the current economy, and in the short term, the joblessness rate is down, the "solution" may be causing problems in the long term. Rather than encouraging the company's workforce structure to evolve, companies are becoming stuck in their current place.

Workforce planning can help clear up some of these problems, by encouraging you to segment your workforce and think in the long term - and avoid this "ossification" (what a word!).
