Workforce Tomorrow Report
Tess Walton

Tess Walton - You now have a valid reason to feel superstitious about reading edition 13 - the government has released some very scary figures for anyone who isn't yet workforce planning!

The Department of Workplace Relations has released an important new report "Workforce Tomorrow - Adapting to a more diverse Australian Labour Market".

The report forecasts a shortfall of 195,000 workers in the Australian market, not in 2025...but in a mere five years' time. How many of those shortages are going to be yours?

Workforce Tomorrow shines new light on the looming shortages, including a projected shortage of 57,600 professionals and associate professionals, and 62,400 in elementary and intermediate clerical, sales and services personnel - both of which exceed the forecast shortages in trades, and both of which impact almost every organisation in Australia. If you have been thinking the issues are only in technical trade skills - think again!

The shortages will also fall across all states and territories, with NSW, Victoria and Queensland the worst hit, and it seems that no industry will be spared. But the report also has some qualitative advice for what this means for employers, including these quotes:

  • "Industries that remain reliant on full-time workers could face more difficulties than otherwise"
  • "Many businesses will have difficulty in continuing to produce their current level of output, let alone in expanding"
  • "Wages could be higher than otherwise"
  • "Costs of recruiting are likely to be higher"
  • "Other countries will compete more strongly with Australia for migrants...and skilled emigration might increase"
  • "Employers will need to be innovative to attract the shrinking supply of available talent"

And most importantly "the variety of effects...indicates that there is no unique solution and employers will need to take account of their own circumstances and tailor approaches to their workforce needs". And all of this within the next five years!

The good news is there is a way to manage this challenging situation - Strategic Workforce Planning. Aruspex's workforce planning framework is designed to tackle exactly these challenges, and to do so in a way that works for your individual organisation.
